LIST Charter
   Charge des tauraux

A group of scientists, concerned by the severe degradation that occured during the last decade in the cave of Lascaux, and aware of the difficulties encountered by the French authorities in charge of the conservation of Lascaux, have reached the conclusion that the safeguard of the cave and its invaluable paintings and engravings is above all a scientific matter. It requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a real expertise not only in various areas of prehistory and related human sciences but also in "hard" sciences such as microbiology, biotechnology, climatology, chemistry and physical-chemistry.

We consider of primary importance to set up an international independent task force regrouping experts in these scientific domains, that will engage in determining the causes of the recent crisis, explore the various possible approaches to solve it, set up scientific treatment procedures, control their implementation and evaluate their effects on a short and long term basis.

The members of the LIST volunteer to make their scientific and technical expertise available to any party interested in the preservation of Lascaux. As such, they offer their collaboration to the French Authorities in charge of Lascaux, to the UNESCO, to the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and to the International Committee for the Preservation of Lascaux (ICPL).

Members of the LIST will exchange informations, ideas, suggestions, evaluations, ... through local meetings, e-mails and all means available to them.

Though individual members of the LIST will hopefully, at a stage or an other, be called upon to get involved in activities and/or committees organized by the French authorities, the UNESCO or ICOMOS, the LIST will at all times keep its full independence.

It is expected that the French authorities will accept providing the LIST with all information needed to work on the problem.
