Speological search for a lower network
in the Lascaux karst
by the Perigueux Speleo-Club

(Spéléo-Dordogne n°192)

 Exploration karst 2011

The Lascaux Karst has been the object, in the past, of detailed studies based on the use of a variety of experimental methods. Thus, microgravimetry, electrical conductimetry, sismography and infra-red aerial photography havez been widely used and have broughta knowledge, for sure only approximate, of the rock structure and geomorphology of the Lascaux cave, the characteristics of which are described in the PhD thesis of Jean Vouvé (1975 - University of Bordeaux I) and in several papers originating from the work he performed with his collaborators.

The observations of Jean Vouvé suggested the presence of an important lower subterranean network in the Lascaux karst, and more particularly of a rather large cavity (nothing, of course, enables one to claim that it may be decorated ...). The nature of its content (sand, air, ...) could not be determined.

The recent observation of a stone scree revealed by the unrooting of a tree
at the hill foot had led to the hypothesis that this scree migh mask an access to the possible lower network. Hence the interest for a survey of the cree. With the authorization of the Regional Archeology Curator, a team of the Perigueux Speleo-Club went to the site in december 2011 to achieve this survey and possibly explore the network.

The report (in French) of this exploration and of its negative results have just been published in the issue number 192 of the "Speleo-Dordogne" review. It can be downloaded by clicking on this
link.

Though this survey has demonstrated that the scree does not open into the putative lower network, it does in no way rule out its existence.
